This is a studio course for 24 students to run in the Fall semester of 2011. The core focus of he studio will be the architectural and urban design challenges posed by Kariakoo, Dar es Salaam with a focus on the effects of scarcity/abundance on creativity. Students will undertake to: 1) map the morphology and social characteristics of Kariakoo; 2) develop planning and/or design strategies or program for dealing with particular challenges that Kariakoo poses; and, 3) design an intervention for Oslo based on the experiences and research done in Dar es Salaam.
