Creativity in Abundance: Oslo’s vacant public buildings

Studio course for 24 graduate students to run in the Fall semester 2011

There are more than 30 major public buildings in Oslo which lie empty. The studio departs from the position that in the age of population increase and limited resources it is not an option, even in an economy of abundance, to have a stock of vacant public buildings which are expensive to maintain and do not contribute to the public good.

The studio will investigate possible temporary uses for these buildings in the period between when the buildings are left vacant and when the Norwegian State or Oslo Municipality decides what to do with the building in question.
